U15 BOYS MIDLANDS TOURNAMENT REPORT

Bu15 prove its not over until the very last whistle

The Bu15 day started with promise, being placed in the pool with two teams previously beaten in the round robin tournaments, and one unknown quantity. By the time the first match had been lost 3-0 and the second drawn 1-1 the mood was subdued. Whilst progressing through to the semi-finals was still statistically possible it was looking an uphill struggle. A talk through positions and the value of pressing, the team went out with determination, winning 5-0. This was enough to go through in second place on goal difference.

The semi-final against the first placed team from the other pool brought the Derbyshire team up against Shropshire, who throughout their matches had looked structured and clinical in their play, winning with ease. By pressing and not allowing Shropshire to play their game, and scoring the first goal within 30 seconds of the start, the game was a 2-2 draw at the final whistle. Palpitations, penalty flicks and five brave players later the game was won 4-3.

The other team making the final was Warwickshire, the 3-0 winners of the first match Derbyshire played at the start of the afternoon. This became a hard fought match with the remaining energy the players had and finished 3-3. Penalty flicks again. Five brave players. One calm and collected goal keeper. A win 5-4 on flicks. Job done!

A huge congratulations to all the Bu15 players who have put in the hard work throughout this season. It would have been easy to give up mentally and physically at any point in this final tournament but the desire and determination was palpable. After last year there was unfinished business. This year it got finished!

U15 GIRLS MIDLANDS TOURNAMENT REPORT

After a very early start and a long journey the Derbyshire U15 girls convened for the final fixtures of the season, with a plan of how they wanted to play, a desire to perform to the best of their ability and most importantly of all with a smile on their faces.

The group schedule saw Derbyshire's first game against Northants, having played them earlier in the season we expected a close encounter, and that was exactly what the match proved to be, our girls were quick out the blocks, playing a great passing move almost the length of the pitch resulting in a goal within the first 2 minutes. As the game progressed Northants grew in confidence and shortly after the restart drew level after catching Derbyshire on the break. However as the game progressed to the final third Derbyshire took control of the game, but were unlucky after constant pressure in the attacking D not to grab a winner. A solid start, setting the stall out for how Derbyshire wanted to play.

The second game was against The Black Country, and despite only playing for 30 minutes, it is fair to say Derbyshire were rampant and ruthless. The hockey played was good, clever passing. The switch was used very effectively, and the opposition could not cope with the variation of play that our team presented. A very good and well deserved 8-0 victory. This set up a top of the table clash with Staffordshire in the final group game.

The red of Staffordshire were well organised, disciplined and determined, however they did not have things all their own way. Staffs took the lead with a goal mid way through the first half, but Derbyshire stuck to their game plan, hassled the players on the ball, nipped the ball from under their noses and caught Staffs with a quick break, the equalizer came before half time. From there on the game could have gone either way, end to end play, chances came and went but unfortunately it was Staffs who capitalised and snuck the ball in for the winning goal.

Finishing second in the group, Derbyshire were pitted against their old nemesis Notts, having played them three times already during the season and lost all three, our girls were determined to put in a good solid performance and let hockey do the talking. It was agreed by the team to press hard in the midfield, deny the opposition space and time on the ball, and pounce on any loose balls. the tactics worked, Derbyshire played some of the best hockey to date, determined and direct resulted in us taking a 2-0 lead. Notts showed great character in bringing the game back to 2-2, setting up for a frantic final five minutes. Derbyshire had the better of the chances, and were very unlucky not to grab the winner and the whistle was blown for full time. Penalty Flicks beckoned, with the first Notts flick sensationally saved by our Keeper, confidence and belief was evident that today could be our day, and it was, 3-2 victors in sudden death saw Derbyshire through to the final.

The final was against the hosts to who were also runners up in the group matches but had overcome Staffs in there semi. Both teams started well, Derbyshire continued with the high intensity pressing in midfield, and clever passing out of defence, Despite the tired legs and minds after a very long day of hockey Derbyshire gave their absolute all, their confidence in the switch across the middle could not be matched, their pace and accuracy of attacks down the flanks causing problems, and their ruthlessness in front of goal were rewarded with the first goal of the game. Not beaten yet Warwickshire managed to scramble one back, however the desire and determination of the team secured a second goal,  2-1. The Derbyshire defence stood firm, and thwarted every attack Warwickshire then created. Every player in the squad played their part in the tournament and indeed the final, every player contributing excellently, and everyone was duly rewarded when the final whistle went.
